For the last 3+ years the Board have been
tenaciously working towards securing planning permission for a new
building to replace the existing bungalow. It has been a process during
which the emotions of hope and disappointment seemed for long periods to
be very finely balanced.
Such a testing process was in many ways understandable, given our
unique site which has Scheduled Ancient Monument status. The design
therefore needed to be highly sensitive to the site, while also
achieving our desired specifications. Much negotiation was required with
the National Park Authorities and English Heritage.
Everybody associated with The Priory was therefore thrilled that Planning Permission was eventually granted in 2010.
In summary the building will incorporate on the Ground Floor – 4 x
ensuite double guest rooms, Common Room, Changing Room, Kit storage
areas, Staff kitchen and lounge. Whilst the First Floor will consist of 4
x ensuite rooms for instructors.
With costs provisionally projected to exceed £800,000, the financial
challenge is daunting, and is certainly not being underestimated.
Hopes are high that we shall be able to convert the design into
reality, and thereby ensure that The Priory can continue to educate and
support our numerous young visitors for many years to come.
